The park is defined by Split Rock Creek, which winds its way through the park and is lined by breathtaking Sioux quartzite formations, otherwise known as Palisades.

Exploring the park today, you’ll understand just how powerful Split Rock Creek has been in the formation of the landscape. Over millions of years, the water cut deep gorges through the Palisades, which geologists believe to be approximately 1.2 billion years old.

Visitors are invited to engage with the landscape and history of the land. There was once a flour mill on site powered by a water-wheel. Then, in 1886, silver was discovered downstream. Unfortunately, the quality was deemed too low to be of much value.

Centuries before the area was developed, Native American groups used catlinite, which is a softer mineral found within quartzite, to make ceremonial pipes.

Palisades State Park is only 157 acres, the second-smallest of its kind in the state, but there are plenty of recreational activities to enjoy. The most popular hiking trail is Split Rock Creek Trail, a 1.5-mile trek rated moderate.
