In 1987, Gerald and Patricia Chouinard stumbled upon the future home of Our Lady of the Sierras Shrine while on a hike. They were struck by the beauty of the area and purchased land to build a home on.

In March of 1998, the Our Lady of the Sierras Shrine opened to the public.

Built from native Arizona river stones and Aspen wood, the small chapel allows visitors to celebrate Mass or to simply sit and pray.

In 2011, a wildfire damaged the chapel and devastated the building’s interior. The mural of Jesus was re-created by the original local artist, Donna Ramaeker.
