In fact, the area that now comprises Olompali State Historic Park is an archaeological wonder. Approximately 50,000 artifacts were recovered here when excavations took place from the 1970s through the 1990s. A recreated Coast Miwok Village serves as a reminder of the ancient humans that lived here for thousands upon thousands of years.

The park is also home to the oldest surviving house north of the San Francisco Bay, originally built in 1776 of adobe bricks. The Burdell Mansion is another historic structure, constructed in the 1870s, that’s worth seeking out along with its associated ranch buildings.
