The Red Mill was built around 1810 and has served many purposes over the years. It has been a wool processing plant, a peach basket factory, and a textile mill, among other uses

It was built by Ralph Hunt, whose father built the stone mill across the river in 1763. This building is now the Hunterdon Art Museum.

The mill went through several owners in a short time with each business failing and the owners falling into debt. After the building changed hands several times, it became known as the “black mill.”

The moniker had nothing to do with the mill’s failures or any “curse,” but rather the greasy black dust it created while grinding graphite. After public outcry, mill owners switched to talc - it then became known as the “white mill.”

Whether graphite or talc, most locals did not love the mill a century ago. Now, it’s a beloved New Jersey museum and part of a larger historic complex. The Red Mill is a can’t-miss attraction for families and photographers alike.
