The Freight House is a wonderful restaurant in Stillwater, Minnesota, that is housed in a historic freight depot. The depot was built in 1883 and soon became a busy hub for growing Stillwater. Today, it is one of the city’s oldest buildings and was the first in Stillwater to be added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The age of the building is most evident in what is now a large, open dining area. The building is as it was when it was built, right up to the heavy trusses that hold the ceiling.

You can and should eat inside at least once, especially when the weather is cool. But if you visit during the summer, the patio is the place to be.

The Freight House patio covers 8,000 square feet and has plenty of seating for parties large and small.

The best part of the patio is that it looks over a beautiful stretch of the St. Croix River. You’ll be able to enjoy the breeze, watch birds swoop down for food, and see boats make their way up and down the river.
