Most Minnesotans Have Never Heard Of Split Rock Creek State Park

Here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, we have access to 67 state parks and many other state recreation areas, scientific and natural areas, state trails, and more. Because there is so much to do, it’s easy to overlook some quieter spots in favor of more flashy attractions. That’s why most Minnesotans haven’t heard of the state park we would like to feature today. But Split Rock Creek State Park, in the state’s southwestern corner, is a perfectly peaceful oasis that makes for a wonderful weekend excursion. Here’s what you can expect when you visit this quiet little prairie park:

Split Rock Creek State Park is a little-known park in southwestern Minnesota. It’s about 8 miles north of Pipestone, not far from the border with South Dakota.

The park covers 1,300 acres and centers on a small, manmade lake.

The lake was created when a dam was built on Split Rock Creek in 1938. The purpose was to provide water recreation in a part of Minnesota that has no natural lakes.

The dam, made out of locally sourced quartzite, is not the only architectural wonder in the park. There is also a charming 1930s arch bridge that carries local traffic.

As planned, the lake offers plenty of recreational opportunities. In the warmer months, a swimming beach draws visitors looking to cool down in the hot southern Minnesota sun.

There’s also a fishing dock for those who would like to cast a line. Or, you can launch your boat and drop your line a little further from shore.

Aside from the structures and the lake, there are many ways to enjoy Split Rock Creek State Park. For example, hike its 4.5 miles of trails. They lead to quietly beautiful prairie views that are much different from the rest of Minnesota.

Camping is another great thing to do in the park. There are sites for both tents and campers. This quiet little prairie park is a great weekend getaway!
