If you’ve ever been to Red Lodge, you know how charming and welcoming the little mountain town is. And if you’ve ever visited between spring and fall, you may have even seen a line out the door of Montana’s one-of-a-kind eatery, Red Box Car. This burger joint is located in a century-old boxcar, and it’s fantastic.

The Red Box Car was once a functioning box car, traveling from Laurel to Red Lodge in the early 1900s.

This particular box car was sitting abandoned in Roberts when June & Ed Alquist, along with the help of Ron & Shirley Kotar, moved it to Red Lodge to open the Red Box Car in 1972.

The menu has expanded since the restaurant’s opening, but it still has the same classics: Burgers, fries, onion rings, salads, and wraps.
