With a year like 2020 it seems inevitable that Maine weather would turn out to be something unexpected. After a drought that’s gone on for months and unseasonably warm temperatures for much of October it looks like mother nature has even more surprises in store. As we inch closer and closer to winter, it looks like winter is inching closer and closer to us with the potential for an early snow this week.
This time of year in Maine usually means fall foliage and enjoying some time outside. In fact, Mainers rely on these weeks between summer and winter to ease into the next few months of snow and cold.

In fact, Maine has only seen an inch or more of snow five times before Halloween since the 1800s.

But, this year things might be moving along just a bit faster. A perfect combination of conditions that begin with a storm system hundreds of miles away could bring the season’s first snow to portions of southern Maine much earlier than expected.

A tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico made landfall on The Gulf Coast and is making its way toward the Northeast. This is expected to bring moisture to New England by Thursday evening.

As a result in the change in conditions, cold air will move from central Canada down toward the US.

The cold air could become trapped over New England, including Maine, causing temperatures to dip low enough for snow.

Lastly, this system is expected to come together Thursday evening when things are dark and cold. That means even higher likelihood of snow creation.

While none of us are likely to be excited about his type of weather so early, we can rest assured that we won’t be seeing a ton of accumulation. For now we might just see between one and two inches and we can save the snow banks for later!
