Montana is called Big Sky Country, and for good reason — let’s just say social distancing is second nature to born-and-raised Montanans. Our state is full of fantastic scenic drives, and in our opinion, there’s really no better state for enjoying a road trip. And while the Beartooth Highway and Going-to-the-Sun Road are known for their twists and turns, we can also appreciate the heart-pumping stretch of land known as MacDonald Pass. While the majority of the pass is a breeze, it definitely has some twists and turns that can surprise you.

MacDonald Pass is located just west of Helena, on the Continental Divide.

This road dates back to the 1860s, when the Montana Territory was established and toll roads were created to help the territory fund the new roads.

While the pass is largely flat and pleasant, it definitely has some twists and turns, and in the winter it can be pretty brutal.

Not only is this road exhilarating, it’s also loaded with local history.

Robby G C / TripAdvisor The Frenchwoman’s Road is named after Madame Guyot, who operated a hostel in the area. Her husband, French Canadian Constant Guyot, ran a hay ranch near Elliston.

In August 1868, Madame Guyot was found murdered. $6,000 in gold had been stolen from her.

Of course, ghosts will be the furthest thing from your mind when you’re traversing this gorgeous terrain.
