Aside from its age, the church is significant as it was built by formerly enslaved people in 1865. After the end of the Civil War, residents bought the land and built a new church, most of which still remains today.

Waddell, of the First Baptist Church, a native of Savannah, Georgia, who became pastor of said church First of January, 1865.”

Among the church’s earliest members was none other than Robert Smalls, a legendary hero of the Civil War and a U.S. Congressmen during Reconstruction.

The church is listed on the Beaufort Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. Historians believe it to be the oldest in Beaufort built by formerly enslaved people.
