The Olympic Peninsula is an absolutely gorgeous, albeit mysterious, place. Full of diverse landscapes, rugged beauty, and hidden nooks and crannies, you could visit 20 different times and have 20 very different experiences. If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path trail that most Washingtonians haven’t even heard of, much less walked, you can’t go wrong with the Lake Angeles Trail.

Lake Angeles sits nestled in a bowl of mountains with high rocky walls, and it’s even more beautiful than it looks in photos.

The Lake Angeles Trail is a 7.4-mile round trip trek that’s located about 15 minutes from Port Angeles.

Joseph Loran / alltrails.com To reach the trailhead, just exit US-101 near milepost 249, following Race Street south 1.2 miles to Hurricane Ridge Road. Proceed on Hurricane Ridge Road for about 5 miles and turn right just before the park entrance booth.

This is definitely not an easy hike, so if you’re a beginner, you’ll want to traverse a few more trails before you try this one.

Aca Yu / alltrails.com You’ll climb over 2,300 feet in just 3.5 miles, which will leave even the most experienced hiker breathless.

But, while this isn’t a simple hike, it’s definitely an enchanting one.

Jenny Van Aken / alltrails.com You’ll traverse through shaded second-growth forest with rows of dense hemlock, enjoying nothing but peace and quiet (and the soothing sounds of nature).

Eventually, you’ll reach Lake Angeles, and you’ll realize it’s well worth the climb.

Matthew Ahola / alltrails.com Views of Klahhane Ridge and Mount Angeles tower high overhead, while the sunshine turns the lake a lovely teal green. Lake Angeles is about 20 acres in size, with a small island in the middle that’s surrounded by fresh mountain water.

While the lake is gorgeous in the summertime sun, don’t write the hike off if the weather is cloudy.

Jason Gordon / alltrails.com The fog around the lake looks absolutely magical.

If you’re up for a challenge and can handle a climb, you’ll fall in love with this trail.
