With Covid-19 and social distancing in full effect, many South Dakotans are looking for ways to stay safe and still get out every once in a while, which is why we are blessed to have so many memorable and easy-to-access drives. If you are looking for a South Dakota drive that is as beautiful as it is exciting (and sometimes nerve-wracking), hop in the car and head to Iron Mountain Road:
Located along the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway is the 17-mile-long Iron Mountain Road, which is thought to be one of the most impressive works of road engineering in the country.

Running from the Mount Rushmore National Memorial to the junction of US 16A, Iron Mountain Road was the product of the Byway’s namesake (Peter Norbeck), who is quoted as saying “this is not meant to be a superhighway, to do the scenery justice you should drive no more than 20 mph and to do it full justice you should simply get out and walk.”

Opened in 1933, Iron Mountain Road is not for the faint of heart (or those with weak stomachs), as it contains an incredible 314 curves and 14 switchbacks, proving that it truly is an engineering marvel!

In addition to its many twists and turns, Iron Mountain Road is surrounded by some of the most pristine Black Hills landscape, so be sure to drive slowly and safely so you can get the full experience.

As per the road sign, you will not only see many curves and switchbacks but also “3 Pigtails, 3 Tunnels, 2 Splits,” and “4 Presidents.”
