Indiana is an excellent state for those who like to wander off the beaten path. Hoosiers can take their pick of a ton of lakes, forests, waterfalls, dunes, and other amazing biomes to explore. Some of those biomes are best explored off-the-road if you catch our drift. There are several areas perfect for off-roading and UTV use here, but we think this one is particularly special. Don’t have an off-road vehicle? That’s alright; you can rent an ATV, UTV, or Jeep and come along for this adventure!
Introducing the amazingly dynamic Interlake State Recreation Area, an enormous off-roaders’ heaven located in Lynnville, Indiana.
andrew hutchison/Flickr When we say enormous, boy, do we mean it! This multi-use recreational area spans 3,550 acres and features more than 100 miles of trails destined to be dominated.
Interlake State Rec Area seems to have it all; it’s got steep-spoil banks, grasslands, and strip pits galore.
Chris/Flickr It definitely wouldn’t be an Indiana getaway without dunes, and boy, does it have bunches! It’s seriously everything an avid outdoors-person could possibly hope for.
Even better, yet, the area is open to all off-road vehicles, including SUVs, ATVs, dirt bikes, and anything you can set your sportsy imagination to.
Marc Doliner/Flickr Be careful, though – due to the popularity and inherent responsibilities of enjoying this particular park, there is no alcohol permitted anywhere on the premises. We strongly suggest you pack lots of water, though – you’ll definitely need it!
The park is open seven days a week, from sunrise to sunset. Summer days are longer and more popular – but Interlake State Rec Area is great during winter, too!
Project LM/Flickr Permits are required to visit the area, which is easily accessible online. Prices vary depending on what you’re planning to do, so make sure to be careful to choose your permits accordingly.
If off-roading isn’t your thing, or you simply get your fill of it, there’s a lot more to do here than just that.
Doyle H/TripAdvisor This rec area offers activities like hunting, horseback riding, fishing, hiking and biking, and even mushroom hunting. You’ll find something new to fall in love with each time you visit!
Other than the literal hundred-plus-miles of hiking, ATV and biking trails, there are also 17 lakes on the recreational area’s acreage.
Doyle H/TripAdvisor We’re pretty sure there will be absolutely no shortage of awesomeness to enjoy, so arrive at sunset and expect to stay all day.
For permit information, a site map, some pictures, and more, be sure to visit the official website here.
