Hoosiers are a hearty people, well suited to withstand wintery blasts. But with the weather always changing like, well, itself, how are you supposed to know just what the snowy season has in store for you?
While by no means infallible, the Farmers’ Almanac has been speculating on upcoming seasons for centuries. This year, it’s an unusually flaky Indiana winter in the cards. Don’t let that mislead you, though. “Flaky” is the type of snow that’s supposed to fall on Hoosier homes across the state this season. It doesn’t mean the winter might cancel its plans and not show up at all.

Cataract Falls, for example, is a gorgeous winter getaway. Its covered bridge is a charming sight in the snow, but it’s the frozen falls make this trip one you can’t flake on this winter.

Don’t forget, there’s lots of beauty, even in the city, to keep the cabin fever from creeping in. Exploring the ruins at Holliday Park in Indianapolis is a great place to start. flickr/Stanley Zimny Focusing on the silver lining of the snow clouds is going to be especially important this year. March is expected to be particularly snowy this season. So, if there are a few days you feel like you’re out of the wood and it turns out that you’re still stuck in the frost, don’t despair. Just remember, like the patient trees, after the snow clears you always spring back.
So, as you hunker down for your Hoosier winter, recall that the Farmers’ Almanac warned you this one will be full of flakes. But there’s no reason to be bitter about the snow shivers as long as you’re prepared. Just get those tires checked, pull on your parka, and ready yourself for another Hoosier holiday done right.
