Thanks to drones — and the footage they’re capable of capturing — we get to see familiar sights from new heights. We also get to see places we never knew existed. Likely the latter, Cana Island is one of Door County’s lesser-known islands. However, don’t let its obscure status fool you. The uninhabited island is brimming with beauty and several historic buildings, including a lighthouse — and this incredible drone footage captures it all. Take a look:
Located near Bailey’s Harbor, Cana Island is an 8.7-acre island in Door County.
google.com Bounded by water on just three sides and attached to the mainland by a 60’ causeway, Cana Island is technically a peninsula.
When the water levels are low, which is the majority of the time, you can actually walk to Cana Island via the cobblestone causeway that connects it to the mainland.
Dutch Blythe Fashion/Flickr Don’t want to walk to the island and risk getting your feet wet? No problem; the Door County Maritime Museum offers tractor-drawn wagon rides to Cana Island via the causeway.
Cana Island’s best feature, though, is its namesake lighthouse.
Cana Island Lighthouse/Facebook When the lighthouse was built in 1869, there were no other lighthouses along the eastern shore of Door County, so its construction was pretty significant.
No visit to Cana Island would be complete without climbing the 97 steps to the top of the lighthouse, where you’ll be met with unparalleled views of Lake Michigan and the Door County peninsula.

In addition to the lighthouse, there are several other historic buildings on Cana Island, including an octagon-shaped oil house, the lighthouse keepers’ home, a barn, and a few others.
