It seems like 2020 has had its own plans for how the year would progress and that includes New Mexico’s beloved chile season. Reports last month suggested production and harvesting may be down this year, annual festivals have been canceled.
It can seem like the world is practically ending but I think this just means we have a chance to shift our focus from large public experiences to something a little more intimate that you can still safely enjoy. Here are a few suggestions on how to get that started.
- The first and most obvious option: bring home a box or three of green chile and roast those bad boys yourself.
Miheco/Flickr There’s no experience quite like smelling chile roasting in the morning air and this is one of the easiest things you can do at home.
- Grab a green chile cheeseburger at your favorite burger joint.
C.C. Chapman/Flickr Can you think of a more classically American way of enjoying that fiery flavor of green chile than topped on a juicy burger? Make one at home, grab a quick meal at fast food locations like Blake’s Lotaburger, or enjoy a fancier version from a sit-down restaurant.
- Enjoy a freshly fried chile relleno filled with gooey cheese.
Eugene Kim/Flickr Since we’re in peak chile season and a relleno is best made with fresh chiles, get ready to dip those cheese-filled chiles in an egg batter for an unbelievable tasting experience.
- Or enjoy chilly treat with the green chile frozen custard at Caliche’s.

- Pick up a frozen WisePies green chile pizza at your local grocery store.
Samat Jain/Flickr Is there a better way to enjoy pizza? I think not! The popular Albuquerque-based pizza joint started selling a select stock of their pizzas in local Smith’s, Albertson’s, and City Markets.
- Sip a craft green chile cerveza from the Sierra Blanca Brewing Company.

- Take home a bottle of Hatch Green Chile wine from St. Clair Winery.

- Hit the road for a trip on the Las Cruces Walk of Flame Green Chile Trail.
