The Long Trail to Mount Horrid is a quiet hike that doesn’t usually see large crowds, so you can depend on experiencing some serenity.

Located in the Joseph Battell Wilderness near Rochester, this trail is about 2.1 miles long. It’s an out-and-back trail that will take you through the woods to some truly jaw-dropping views.

The trail winds its way through tall trees and over rocky terrain. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and consider bringing some hiking poles, as you’ll gain about 1,033 feet before reaching the main overlook.

But once you get there, you’ll totally forget those aching feet. The views from the Great Cliff Viewpoint are simply stunning. Don’t forget to bring your camera along to capture the beauty of the wilderness below.

You can hike this trail in all seasons, though most hikers prefer to visit between April and October. Snow makes the path slippery and muddy. This can add hours to your hiking time.

Dogs are welcome to use this trail as long as they remain leashed. Peregrine falcons sometimes use this area to nest, which means that the trail may be closed unexpectedly to protect their nesting grounds.
