Some of Virginia’s most famous trails are also the longest and most difficult to complete — we’re looking at you, McAfee Knob and Old Rag Mountain. Fortunately, however, there are plenty of trails that don’t require as much endurance or time to complete. One of our favorites is Hanging Rock Overlook, a short and sweet trail that promises an incredible payoff. The mountain views you’ll enjoy from the top are simply unparalleled. Here’s more on this short mountain trek that may become your new favorite hike in Virginia.

You’ll find the trailhead for Hanging Rock Overlook tucked away in the Shawvers Run Wilderness. First, you’ll need to drive down approximately three miles worth of gravel on Potts Mountain Road before finding the parking area.

As you can see from the photograph below, the parking lot is relatively small; it can accommodate about 5 cars. Fortunately, however, this off-the-beaten-path trail doesn’t get too crowded, especially if you go during the week.
