Lookout towers were once a huge deal in Georgia, and not simply because of the spectacular views that they offer. These towers, often nicknamed fire towers, were used back in the day in order to combat forest fires in the southern United States. Built back in the 1930s, this giant castle-like tower was a product of the Civilian Conservation Corps and has since been renovated over the years.

Hikers will reach the tower at just over a mile on the loop trail but don’t worry, there is still plenty to see beforehand.

Just make sure when you’re hiking the loop to the tower, the weather is relatively good—hikers won’t be able to see much from the tower if the weather is especially foggy.
