There are tons of great trails to check out in Lassen Volcanic National Park, but the hike to Cinder Cone is definitely one-of-a-kind. Although rated as difficult, every step of this 4-mile hike will give you something to remember.

The trail starts in the park’s Butte Lake parking area. It’s suggested that hikers stop by the visitor center to pick up a leaflet that explains the various features of the Cinder Cone Nature Trail. You can also grab one at the trailhead.

At first, the trail appears to be quite easygoing with a gentle grade that’s surrounded by beautiful woodlands. However, the trail quickly begins to steepen as Cinder Cone comes into view. Be aware that there is very little shade on the trail and you’ll be completely exposed as you climb the cone. Sunscreen and a hat are a must!

The ascent up Cinder Cone is definitely heart-pumping, but the incredible views and extraordinary scenery serve as constant motivation. At various points along the trail you’ll witness landmarks like Lassen Peak, Snag Lake, Prospect Peak, and the Fantastic Lava Beds in the distance.
