Rhode Island has a lot of character, there’s no doubt about that. And for such a small state, Rhody happens to have quite a variety of small towns with a lot to offer. From our charming historic villages to our relaxing seaside escapes, you’ll never run out of perfect day trips here. These five towns are especially tiny, but they’re always worth visiting.
- Watch Hill

Latham Jenkins / Flickr Watch Hill is a quiet, secluded place filled with the kind of luxurious homes we can only dream of. But it also happens to be a gorgeous seaside village with a main street full of shops and restaurants, a beautiful harbor, and possible celebrity sightings (especially Ms. Swift).
- Exeter

Roger Williams / Flickr Exeter is, among other things, a paradise for nature lovers. Fisherville Brook Wildlife Refuge is Audubon’s largest public property at 1,010 acres, and you’ll never know what kind of creatures you’ll see there. The town was founded in 1742, so saying it has a long history would be an understatement.
- Chepachet

Doug Kerr / Flickr Tucked away in the town of Glocester sits Chepachet, a small village with an abundance of antique shops and vintage finds. Enjoy some window shopping, check out Mulberry Vineyard, or just walk around and admire all the historic buildings.
- New Shoreham

JJBers / Flickr When was the last time you paid a visit to Block Island? New Shoreham is just a short ferry ride from Point Judith, Newport, or Fall River. The town is very walkable and the ferry terminal is in the middle of it, so you can even leave your car behind if you’re just going for the day.
- Jamestown

Kenya Allmond / Flickr Jamestown is like Newport’s quieter neighbor, surrounded by Narragansett Bay and several state parks. Wander around the famous Beavertail Lighthouse and Park for the best ocean views.
