For the most part, Minnesota’s landscape is flat. Sure, there are a few rolling hills in the southeast Bluff Country. There’s even a small mountain range, the Sawtooth Mountains, up north. By and large, though, the North Star State is known for its 10,000 beautiful lakes. But there are a few places where you can get a great view from above, including a lovely lesser-known bird observatory in Duluth. When you visit, you can gaze upon the North Shore from high above the surrounding area. During wintertime, the view is even more beautiful under a heavy coat of snow. Here’s what you’ll find when you stop by in the winter:

Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory is a popular area in Duluth, Minnesota. It’s known for the many birds that pass through the area, making it a prime spot for birdwatchers.

Hawk Ridge, which sits on a hill high above Duluth, is also known for its beautiful scenery. When you visit, you’ll have an aerial view of the city.

The area is beautiful all year. In the winter, though, the four miles of pathways along the ridge are covered in a heavy blanket of spectacular snow. This is one of the most picturesque spots in Duluth.

From above, you can see the snow-covered rooftops of Duluth’s homes. The height makes it feel like you are far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city below.

Not only will you see rooftops, you’ll also spot the icy, blue-gray waters of Lake Superior in the distance. This is one of the best views of the lake in Duluth. If you’re lucky, you might even get to watch a ship come in when the waters aren’t frozen solid.

Of course, there are still opportunities to spot birds at Hawk Ridge in the winter. Guests will find events highlighting the many birds that live or travel through the area.

All in all, Hawk Ridge is a wonderful place to see snow-covered Duluth from above. If you’re searching for an excuse to plan a wintry trip to the North Shore, this stunning locale might just be the ticket.
