Is there another state with more adorable small towns than Maine? We’re going to have to say no and just one road trip will prove it! No matter what corner of Vacationland you’re visiting, there’s likely a cute town with a quintessential New England Main Street. But of all those to choose from, which is the best? It’s hard to pick a favorite but this one in Kennebec County is high on the list.

Welcome to beautiful Hallowell! This little beauty was incorporated in 1771 and gets its name from Boston merchant Benjamin Hallowell, one of the Kennebec Proprietors.

Back in its early days there were more than 70 shops along Water Street, which is the main street through the center of town. And there were about 2,500 residents with involvement in industries like logging, trading, and shipbuilding.

The town sits along the Kennebec River, which in early days allowed for export of things like textiles, wire, shoes, and books.

It became a go-to for folks looking for antiques, but with more diverse shops and restaurants today, it’s great for a number of things!

We love visiting on a sunny day and strolling down Water Street.
