As if the current COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t already prompted you to further want to stay indoors, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has once again informed residents and the public that they should keep an eye out for rapidly growing plants like Giant Hogweed and Wild Parsnip.

If you take a look at the latest map and data released by the DEC, you’ll see that Giant Hogweed continues to be quite a literally growing issue for of our state, specifically affecting areas all out around Western New York.

If you’re unfamiliar with Giant Hogweed, this massive plant is known to grow up to 14-feet tall and if you end up brushing against or breaking the Giant Hogweed plant, it releases sap that when combined with sunlight (and moisture), can actually cause severe burns within 24 to 48 hours!

Seriously, just look at how tall they can get!

That’s not all! While you’re keeping your eyes open for Giant Hogweed, you’ll also want to be sure to avoid Wild Parsnip - a plant that when brushed against your skin, can be problematic and cause issues for you if you come in contact with ultraviolet light.

So, if you stumble upon either of these plants anywhere in New York State, be sure to stay far away from them to ensure that you’re safe!
