One of the most impressive parts about hiking in Virginia is the diversity of terrain you’ll encounter. From marshy wetlands to craggy mountains, sand caves, and just about everything in between, Virginia’s trails are as unique as they are beautiful. Today, we’d like to introduce you to one that belongs on your outdoor bucket list: Furnace Mountain Trail. Located in Shenandoah National Park, this 6.5-mile trail is an all-day adventure that promises to impress with its otherworldly rock formations and jaw-dropping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. So lace up those hiking boots and let’s go!
Who’s up for a beautiful adventure? It all begins at Milepost 84.4 on Skyline Drive, where you’ll find the parking area and trailhead.

You’ll head south on the Trayfoot Mountain Trail for about 1 mile until you reach the spur trail. At that point, you’ll continue onward as the train gently rises and descents.

As you approach the summit of Blackrock Mountain and hike along the ridgeline, you’ll notice that the terrain becomes even more fascinating.

While the peak of Blackrock Mountain is made of blackened quartz, you’ll notice the sandstone at the top of Furnace Mountain to be remarkably different.
