In case 2020 wasn’t strange enough, there’s a full moon rising over Ohio this Halloween. Even stranger? The full moon we’ll experience this Halloween will also be a unique phenomenon called a Blue Moon—but it likely won’t actually be blue in color. Here’s what you can expect to see hovering over Ohio this weekend:

This Halloween, both folklore and astronomers predict a strange occurrence in the night sky. A full Blue Moon will light up the night on October 31, 2020.

(As if 2020 wasn’t strange enough, Halloween might just be a bit creepier than years past.)

Phong Nguyen/Flickr We really shouldn’t be surprised.

In spite of its peculiar name, it’s unlikely that the full Blue Moon will actually be blue in color.

So if it’s not blue in color, what makes a Blue Moon a Blue Moon? According to earthsky.org, a Blue Moon is the second of two full moons in a single calendar month.

It’s actually really rare for Blue Moons to be blue in color—and they don’t even have to be full moons to show blue color, according to earthsky.org.

Blue Moons also occur as the third of four full moons in a single season, which means this type of seasonal Blue Moon will occur on August 22, 2021.

Whatever color the moon turns out to be this Halloween, it’s going to be big, bright and beautiful. Keep your eyes to the sky!
