New York is home to one of the prettiest fairytale spots around. Fort Crown Point is a sprawling ruin that looks like something out of a storybook, but is actually a fascinating historical site just begging to be explored. Here’s what you need to know about visiting (no magic wand required).
Fort Crown Point, formally known as Crown Point State Historic Site, is one of the most scenic and historic spots in the state.

The crumbling ruins to be found at Crown Point aren’t those of a fairytale castle, but of an old military fort from the 1700s.

The French originally built the fort in 1737 to help them raid British settlements in New York and neighboring states.

The British captured the structure in 1759 and expanded it, only to have the fort stolen once more by America colonists during the Revolutionary War just a few decades later.

Today, the fort is a beautiful place to wander and explore. You can take a guided tour or stroll around the ruins by yourself. Admission is $4 for adults and $3 for kids. The grounds are open year-round from sunrise to sunset.

The area also affords some absolutely stunning views of Lake Champlain and the surrounding landscape. Be sure to bring your camera and make time to stop by the fort’s museum to learn more about the site.
