Take a walk on the boardwalk paths through the site. It’s open year-round to walk through, however, some of the buildings are closed for entry in the winter.

Throughout the site, you’ll find tons of history. There are fort encampments and a beautiful Officers’ Quarters building. There is even an old cemetery.

The Post Cemetery is fascinating. The graves of soldiers and locals are primarily from the 1800s.

Along with the cemetery, there is a variety of other original and reconstructed buildings that bring the fort together. Did we mention it’s scenically located right on the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers?

When they’re open, you can take a tour through the interiors of some of the buildings. They still contain some of the things you would have found inside when Fort Buford was an important military fort. It’s truly a trip back in time.
