This has been a strange year, but one of the positives is that there has never been a better time to explore our own backyards. Rather than hopping a flight to an exotic location, many of us are wisely choosing to stick close to home instead. And when your home happens to be in Rhode Island, it’s easy to take a beautiful day trip, or a “daycation” as we like to call it. And Mohegan Bluffs happens to be a perfect destination.

The Mohegan Bluffs are located on the southern shore of Block Island.

Kayla S / TripAdvisor These large 200-foot clay cliffs got their name from the battle of the Niantic and the Mohegan, which took place here in the mid-16th century.

But looking at this place now, you’d never know such a bloody battle took place here.

Dave B / TripAdvisor In fact, this is currently one of the most peaceful places in New England.

Some would say the beach that sits at the base of the bluffs is the most beautiful one in the Ocean State.

Stephanie S / TripAdvisor Here you’ll find a secluded, rocky place to swim, surf, and relax.

In order to reach the beach, however, you’ll have to take a steep set of 141 steps.

Kayla S / TripAdvisor Even if you don’t have a fear of heights, the steps can be a little intimidating. But they’re worth it.

This area truly offers one of the most dramatic views of the Atlantic in all of Rhode Island.

Fran C / TripAdvisor Needless to say, it is a popular place in the summer. Visit early in the day, preferably on a weekday, to avoid the crowds.

The Mohegan Bluffs have eroded about 250 feet over the years, prompting locals to move the Block Island Southeast Lighthouse back about 350 feet so it wouldn’t tumble into the ocean.

jwells3665 / TripAdvisor The lighthouse is a designated National Historic Landmark, so it was important to protect.

The Mohegan Bluffs can be enjoyed from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.

travelreimagined_jen / TripAdvisor And we’re thankful for that, because both the sunrise and the sunset views from this spot can’t be beat.
