Some hikes are extremely strenuous and worth every step. The hike to Willow Falls is not one of those hikes. Don’t get us wrong. It’s a trek worth taking since it leads to the stunning Willow Falls; however, it lacks in the difficulty department, which is just fine with us. Take a look:

When you’re in the mood to soak up some nature AND beat the heat, a visit to Willow Falls is in order.

The three-tiered waterfall is located in Willow River State Park and can be reached via several trails.

The easiest and shortest trail is the Willow Falls Hill Trail, which is just 0.85 miles round trip. You’ll find the parking lot for this trailhead on River Road, just a short drive from the park’s main entrance.

Over the course of the trail, you’ll come across several intersections; however, there are trail markers to keep you on the right path.

Eventually, you’ll arrive at a wooden footbridge, which traverses the Willow River before coming to an end at a platform that overlooks Willow Falls.

The platform offers exceptional views of Willow Falls, which is pretty unique for several reasons.

First, it’s situated in a 200-foot-deep gorge that’s comprised of 600-million-year-old rock.

There’s also its size – the waterfall is 45 feet in height and over 100 feet wide, much wider than many other falls in the state.

Viewing the waterfall is only half the fun, though. The other half comes from splashing around in its waters.

To access the base of Willow Falls, simply follow the path situated right next to the viewing platform.

Be careful, though. The rocks that surround the waterfall can be a bit slippery. And remember, there’s no lifeguard, so you’ll be swimming at your own risk.

Willow River State Park is open daily, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. For more information, call (715) 386-5931. You can also visit the Willow River State Park website. Please note, due to COVID-19, the Willow Falls overlook/viewing platform is temporarily closed; however, you can still access the base of the falls.
