Oregon is home to some seriously stunning churches scattered across the state. But if you’re interested in a little history along with your spirituality, you can’t go wrong with paying a visit to First Presbyterian Church in Portland. This regal structure dates all the way back to the 1880s, and it seems to only improve with age.

You’ll find First Presbyterian Church at 200 SW Alder Street in downtown Portland, where it has remained since 1890.

Joe Lourenco / Google Construction on the building actually began four years earlier. This gorgeous structure has been called one of the finest examples of High Victorian Gothic architecture in the state of Oregon, and rightfully so.

The First Presbyterian Church of Portland was organized in January of 1854, making it the third Presbyterian church in the Oregon Territory.

First Presbyterian Church / Google The congregation at that time consisted of just 12 members who would often meet in each other’s homes. Those numbers grew over the years, and by 1860, the funding for the church had begun.

By the 1880s, the congregation had grown to 900 members, and a plot of land was purchased at 12th and Alder for a new church.

The main sanctuary is massive, featuring a balcony and stairways that were added in 1892.

The church also has some gorgeous stained glass windows that line both sides of the sanctuary, the narthex, and the four roof dormers.

As if the sanctuary wasn’t beautiful enough, the outdoor area is an epic urban garden.
