Northern California certainly has its share of stunning yet lesser-known destinations that are worth exploring. So when Insider released a list of little-known spots across the U.S., it came as no surprise that one of our very own was named! Fern Canyon was one of the 20 destinations named, and we definitely understand why. Home to lush, fairytale-like scenery, it’s one of those places you simply have to see to believe.
Tucked away in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park in Humboldt County, Fern Canyon is by far one of Northern California’s best-kept secrets.

It takes some effort to find Fern Canyon and that’s probably why it still remains such a tranquil destination to this day. From Highway 101, drive two miles north of Orick to Davison Road and turn left. Continue for ten miles until you reach the parking lot.

After parking, visitors must then take the Fern Canyon trail straight into the canyon. It’s approximately a quarter-mile hike to the canyon, but it’s worth every step. Just be sure to come equipped with waterproof shoes or river sandals - it’s known to get wet!

The canyon is home to seven different types of ferns, some of which are ancient species that go back 325 million years. The ferns definitely give the canyon a real prehistoric vibe. Steven Spielberg must’ve agreed, as he used it for the setting of Jurassic Park II.

Visitors can continue following the Fern Canyon Trail as it winds along Home Creek and crosses footbridges and wooden planks. With something new around every corner, including trickling waterfalls, the trail is packed with beauty from start to finish.
