Even the most haunted town in Missouri would give us little pause if we wanted to visit or even drive through during the day. Let’s face it, though. If we’re confronted by the paranormal in the daylight, we’ll probably be a little less frightened than we would be in the dead of night when everything is shut and everyone is asleep. That begs the question. Do you dare drive through the most haunted town in Missouri at night?

In addition to hugging the Mississippi River, New Madrid sits directly above the New Madrid fault. That pairing, some say, is why New Madrid is the most haunted town in Missouri.

The courthouse is just one of the spots said to be haunted. Two men, who murdered a gas station owner and who were subsequently executed, are said to roam the New Madrid County Courthouse to this day.

They’re still seeking justice for the sentence they received for the Christmas Eve 1933 murders they committed. A judge promised if they pled guilty, they would receive life in prison.

The judge lied. The two homeless men, who just happened to be passing through town and were broke when they killed the gas station store owner, were ordered hanged. Those charged with hanging the men were said to be drunk, making the process long and painful for the two men.

The Dixie Theatre is also said to be haunted by the spirit of John, a Civil War soldier. Odd things often happen in theatre — from whistling and footsteps when no one else is around to shadows moving across the walls.
