Editor’s Note: Unfortunately, the trail to Hanging Lake is closed indefinitely due to wildfire damage.

Do you consider yourself to be somewhat of an expert hiker who has conquered nearly every notable trail around the Centennial State? If you answered yes, you have most likely traveled the Hanging Lake Trail a time or two, but have you ever attempted it in the winter? While it does take a bit more preparation, this popular summertime trail manages to become even more beautiful during these snowy months. Hanging Lake in Colorado is just one winter attraction that you won’t want to miss.

Located near Glenwood Springs is the jaw-dropping Hanging Lake, which is gorgeous year-round but manages to become even more stunning when covered in ice. This winter attraction is truly one of Colorado’s hidden gems.

Thanks to its pristinely turquoise water (which is a result of a travertine deposition created by dissolved limestone from the Mississippian Period Leadville Formation,) hikers typically want to visit when the water is thawed, but by doing so miss out on a unique winter wonderland. One of the most beautiful lakes in Colorado, many people come to visit this gorgeous spot all year long.

See what we mean? With views like these, it should be at the top of your list of must-see places in Colorado. Who could resist visiting such an enchanting spot?

Since the Hanging Lake Trail is a steep 1.2-mile backcountry hike, visiting during the wintertime months is only recommended for the more experienced hiker, as the trail follows a narrow canyon that can be packed with both snow and ice. But if you’re experienced enough, it will be a hike you’ll never forget.

If you decide to hike this amazing trail, the U.S. Forest Service recommends coming prepared with such equipment as winter traction devices over your boots, hiking poles, and survival gear (including extra food, clothing, headlamps, and a first-aid kit.) Always dress in layers, and make sure to let someone know where you’re going.

As this travertine lake is very sensitive, it is vital that visitors neither touch the water nor leave any trace of their visit, as any human contact can harm the lake’s fragile ecosystem. Practice the “Leave no trace” ethos, and pack in and pack out all of your gear. Generations after us will want to see this stunning hidden gem just how it is now!

Please note: Due to past abuse of the area and general overcrowding, a permit is required to visit Hanging Lake. For more information, please call (970) 384-6309 or visit the U.S. Forest Service’s website. It may take a little extra legwork to get out there, but it will be worth every minute of your time. This hidden gem in Colorado truly is a must-see!
