Eagles abound in the mountain state, and it’s not so rare to see one soaring high overhead or perched on a tall tree above a river or lake. As you watch them, do you ever envy their eagle-eye view of West Virginia? Well, this climb won’t get you quite that high, but it’s a step (or several!) in the right direction, and it will offer a perch from which you can see for miles!
Where do you go to catch a sunset? When the golden hour comes to our state, there are so many good vantage points in West Virginia with picturesque views of the western horizon. One that’s well worth visiting is Dorsey’s Knob Park set high above Morgantown.

And at the peak of Dorsey’s Knob is Sky Rock, a massive boulder that juts even higher in the sky.

You can scramble up to the top of this rock on the knob for one of the best views of Morgantown and the surrounding areas that you’ll ever see.

Dorsey’s Knob and Sky Rock are part of a larger park system, Dorsey’s Knob Park, that includes a lodge, a playground, trails, disc golf, and several shelters.

There’s also educational signage in the park to help you identify what you are seeing from Sky Rock and tell you a little bit about the history of the area.

So next time you are in Morgantown, don’t forget to visit Dorsey’s Knob Park. It’s a beautiful spot year-round: in the winter, the views from the knob are top-notch, but in the spring, summer, and fall, the park itself is dressed in its best.

But whenever you come, take the time and effort to climb to the top so that you can sit awhile and enjoy the view. You won’t regret it!

Have we talked you into tackling this climb? If so, learn more on the park’s website here. And if you like overlooks, try this one as well, which winds through one of the only untouched spruce forests in the state to a view that is hard to beat anywhere else in the state!
