Oregon’s Sauvie Island is a great place for a day trip. Whether you’re taking a hike, doing some bird-watching, or visiting one of its beaches, there’s plenty to see and do on this 24,000-acre island. During your visit, you might want to find the abandoned UFO boat near Collins Beach. It’s a weird shipwrecked boat that looks like a spaceship and is covered in graffiti.
Sauvie Island is just 10 miles from downtown Portland, and it’s a huge playground for nature lovers.

In addition to an occasional nudist sauntering down the beach, this place also features something even more unexpected: a spaceship-shaped shipwreck, tucked amongst the trees.
Casey Boling/Google This odd boat was built in 1972 by Richard Ensign, who was convinced that the planet was going to hell in a handbasket. His plan was to construct a boat he could live in if the apocalypse happened.
The boat is 31 feet long, and was originally powered using two large sails and a paddlewheel. Mr. Ensign took several voyages in his craft before a big flood in 1996 pushed the boat high up above the vegetation line at Collins Beach.

The boat ran aground, and there it has remained for more than two decades. Today, it’s covered with vibrant graffiti, and it’s definitely a weird, wondrous piece of artwork.

It’s not a good idea to climb down inside this wrecked vessel, but some folks do it anyway. They find a large area that was originally meant to house a crew of up to 12 people and supplies for the impending end of the world.
