Kansas is routinely described as one of the flattest states, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some jaw-dropping rock formations jutting out of Kansas’ famous fields. Case in point: Monument Rocks, also nicknamed the Chalk Pyramids, which are sedimentary rock formations that stand a whopping 70 feet tall.
If you’re looking for a cheap and awe-inspiring road trip destination, Monument Rocks is where you want to go. Standing about 25 miles south of Oakley, Monument Rocks is located on private rangeland, but visitors are allowed during daylight hours — and they’re allowed in for free!
Monument Rocks was formed roughly 80 million years ago during the Cretaceous Period when a seabed slowly started eroding. That means a lot of fossils have been found here: remains of fish, sharks, turtles, and swimming birds have all been discovered fossilized at Monument Rocks.
