To find Black Sands Beach, take the road into Shelter Cove and turn right onto Beach Road. The road makes a dead-end at Black Sand Beach and you’ll find parking at the top. Accessible parking for disabled folks can be located right at the beach access point.

The beach consists of a 3.5-mile stretch of rugged coastline. Right away, the beach’s stark beauty will take your breath away. The “black sand” provides a stunning contrast to the big blue ocean and the lush green cliffs.

The beach acts as the breathtaking starting point to the 25-mile-long Lost Coast Trail that ends at Mattole Beach to the north. This coastal trail makes for a remarkable backpacking adventure, taking hikers to several wilderness camp spots and remote destinations.
