Just north of the little town of Shelter Cove is a remarkable beach that you simply have to see to believe. Black Sands Beach is a true gem on Northern California’s Lost Coast that’s well worth exploring!

To find Black Sands Beach, take the road into Shelter Cove and turn right onto Beach Road. The road makes a dead-end at Black Sand Beach and you’ll find parking at the top. Accessible parking for disabled folks can be located right at the beach access point.

The beach consists of a 3.5-mile stretch of rugged coastline. Right away, the beach’s stark beauty will take your breath away. The “black sand” provides a stunning contrast to the big blue ocean and the lush green cliffs.

The beach acts as the breathtaking starting point to the 25-mile-long Lost Coast Trail that ends at Mattole Beach to the north. This coastal trail makes for a remarkable backpacking adventure, taking hikers to several wilderness camp spots and remote destinations.
