Just outside of Richardton, North Dakota is a unique recreation area called Schnell Ranch. Encompassing 2,000 acres, it is now public, protected land that you can visit yourself.

This area was owned and used by the Schnell family for 80 of its 120 years. You can learn more about their past, the area’s history, and more thanks to informational signs at the park.

The history of this place is fascinating, but that’s not the only reason to visit it. There is a 1.5-mile nature trail that’s perfect for a hike.

Throughout the trail, you’ll pass through trees, meadows, and a scenic, serene pond. It’s a lesser-known park, so it’s usually pretty quiet here.

If you love birdwatching or wildlife spotting, Schnell Ranch is a great place to do so. Many types of birds, both native and migratory, as well as animals like fox, porcupine, and deer can often be spotted here.

Stay for more than a day at one of the six campsites. Keep in mind that Schnell is a non-motorized vehicle park and campsites are primitive for tent camping.
