West Virginia takes hot dogs very seriously. There are several great chains like T&L, Hometown Hot Dogs, and the Custard Stand. There are hundreds more little independent hot dog shops. It seems like every town in West Virginia has at least once hot dog joint.

What defines a West Virginia hot dog depends on where you live. In the north, it’s topped with mustard, onion, and “sauce” (chili without beans). In the south, you also get a sweet and creamy “slaw” (coleslaw). West Virginians will argue their whole lives about which is better.

Although the chains are also delicious, let’s take a look at a few of the best independent hot dog spots.

  1. King Tut Drive-In, Beckley

King Tut Drive-In This old-fashioned drive-in has been serving up West Virginia dogs since the early 1940s. Hot dogs come with the standard mustard, onion, chili & slaw, and you can also get cheese.

TripAdvisor/Virginia W. Even though we were trying to avoid chains, there’s one chain that just needed to be mentioned: the Hinton Dairy Queen. Although the chain is national, this location knows what a good West Virginia dog should be. While you eat you can enjoy great views of the New River.
