New Jersey is a beautiful state but, when it comes to winter – avoid it at all costs. The Garden State is an absolute mess. You absolutely do not want to visit! Think that will scare the out-of-staters away? Locals know better but we’d bet some people believe our state should be skipped during the snowy season. You know what they say…
- It’s cold.
Jasmin Merdan/Moment Collection/Getty Images Well, it’s not warm, but there are 28 states with average winter temperatures lower than ours. We come in at a cozy 33 degrees while states like Maine and Minnesota average under 20 degrees Fahrenheit!
- It snows too much.
TorriPhoto/Moment Collection/Getty Images Between 1981 and 2010, Atlantic City received an average of 16.5 inches of snow. Nearby cities including Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Columbus, Ohio totaled around 30 inches of snow each year. You can thank our warm ocean air.
- There’s nothing to do.
Sue Barr/Image Source Collection/Getty Images Indoor fun may be out this winter but we can still go tubing, snowshoeing, ice skating, sledding, hiking, snowmobiling, wildlife watching, and more.
- You can’t even go skiing.
Cobershneider/RooM collection/Getty Images Except at the beloved Campgaw Mountain and epic Mountain Creek with four peaks, eight lifts, a terrain park, lessons, and more.
- The beach is out, you can’t swim in icy water.
Vicki Jauron, Babylon and Beyond Photography/Moment Collection/Getty Images Tell that to all the Polar Plungers out there. But seriously, the beach is beautiful (and peaceful) in the winter. You may spot snowy owls among the dunes!
- Everything is gray.
Dan Taradellas/Moment Collection/Getty Images Sometimes, winter is gray. Mostly, it’s not. Just check out this shot snapped in Hillsborough!
- It’s all-around ugly.
Denise Panyik-Dale/Moment Collection/Getty Images Yeah, New Jersey is hideous in the winter…especially around the holidays. Or maybe, like this shot snapped in Morristown, it’s magical.
- Things are gross and gloomy.
Jose Luis Pelaez/Stone Collection/Getty Images Except for all the winter fun we have. Do you want to build a snowman?
