Some places in our state are downright magical, like they are straight out of a fairytale. That’s one of the things I love about Wisconsin. Here are twelve fascinating spots that, I think, seem like they could be the backdrop of any Disney movie.

Please note, Pewit’s Nest is temporarily closed.

  1. Muralt Bluff Prairie

Joshua Mayer/Flickr Couldn’t you totally see a Disney princess frolicking in this prairie? This is 62 acres of preserved prairie bluff land in Monticello.

  1. Big Manitou Falls

Doug Kerr/Flickr This 165 foot waterfall would be the ideal waterfall for a fairy tale, not just because of its massive size, but also with its beautiful forest surroundings.

  1. Pewit’s Nest

kenneth casper/Flickr This geological formation is not a swimming hole, although a lot of people treat it as such. This deep gorge’s coloring and size makes it look magical.

  1. Horicon Marsh

usfwsmidwest/Flickr This marsh would make a picturesque background for a fairy tale. Not just that, but the loads of wildlife could certainly be great characters in a fairy tale.

  1. Washington Island

Amy Meredith/Flickr Only accessible by ferry, Washington Island feels pretty isolated. Couldn’t you see these wonderful beaches in a fairy tale? It looks like a private island.

  1. Trempealeau

Joshua Mayer/Flickr Check out the closest thing we have to a mountain in Wisconsin with the Mississippi River as a backdrop. It is lush and totally magical looking.

  1. Devil’s Lake State Park

Lotzman Katzman/Flickr The incredible rock formations at this park make it seem straight out of a fairytale. Pictured here are just some of the odd rocks that fell a long time ago and have stayed that way. It doesn’t even seem real.

  1. Kohler Andrae State Park

LazyYogi/Flickr Who knew that Sheboygan could look this gorgeous? Yes, Kohler Andrae looks like an ideal beach.

  1. Turtle-Flambeau Flowage

chumlee10/Flickr These tranquil flowage scenes, particularly under a sunset, are one of the scenes that make Wisconsin so beautiful. It is an ideal backdrop for some sort of fairy tale.

  1. Brule River

Aaron Carlson/Flickr Making your way down the Brule River in a canoe, and you will see why this is one of the best rivers in Wisconsin. Nestled in Brule River State Forest, this tranquil river could be a river in a fairy tale.

  1. Toft Point

Joshua Mayer/Flickr Some of these interesting rock formations could certainly be a hiding place for a villain (or a good guy, I guess) in a fairy tale. Some of these spots in Door County require some hiking, but the formations are well-worth the walk.

  1. Apostle Islands

Joshua Mayer/Flickr One visit to the Apostle Islands, and you will doubt how these are even real. This chain of 21 islands is perfect to explore in winter or summer, with a kayak or with snowshoes. They are magical and I could definitely see them as the backdrop to some fairytale taking place in the sea.
