11 Ruins In Oklahoma That Will Remind You Of The Past

If you’re from Oklahoma, you know there is an abundance of abandoned houses, farms, schools and buildings that have been left to decay. Forgotten remains of once cherished places still stand across the state today. Some of those places have been neglected for so long, that they have become ruins. Here are 11 of those ruins in Oklahoma that will transport you to the past.

Fort Washita was a US military post in Durant, Oklahoma. Although it has been in ruins for many years, the Oklahoma Historical Society bought the fort grounds in 1962. It is a historical site and museum open to the public. Shown below is the West Barracks building.

This old limestone building in Afton, off Route 66, is being reclaimed by nature.

This old gas station was built in the early 1920s in Luther, OK, on Route 66. Even though it is in ruins, someone maintains a flower box.

The original Norfolk school in Payne County burned down in 1925. In 1926, they constructed the still standing brick structure with 11 rooms, gymnasium, auditorium, workshops and dressing rooms. It closed its doors in 1958.

These ruins are all that stands left of the old Hollister School in Hollister, OK. The school was built in 1922, and closed in 1968.

High on a huge hill in Bartlesville, sits the ruins of a 19th century Victorian mansion haunted by its former owners, the Labadies. Parts of the foundation and stone walls are all that remains of this decaying mansion.

The four-story, six-unit Virginia Apartments at 10th and Kihekah in Pawhuska were built in 1922. They suffered a damaging fire, and all that remains are the ruins of the once-luxury apartments.

Collings Castle, located in Turner Falls Park in Davis, OK, isn’t completely abandoned, but it is falling apart. The Castle was built from native brick and stone and was built in the early 1930s by Dr. Ellsworth Collings, Dean of Education at the University of Oklahoma.
