Here in Ohio, winter can be quite terrible. The scenery isn’t worth writing home about and the list of things to do is pretty short. I mean, it’s safe to say life pretty much just stops in the Buckeye State once winter hits, right? The following are 11 reasons why no one in their right mind visits Ohio in the winter.
- It’s just plain ugly.
Mike/Flickr Let’s be real. Do the snow-covered trees and sparkling frost really add to the beauty of our landscape? Or are we just kidding ourselves?
- If you want to go hiking, there’s really nothing to see.
Chris Palmer/Flickr It’s not like we have 75 state parks to choose from or anything.
- It’s also a terrible time to take a scenic drive.
Thomas Dwyer/Flickr Again, nothing to see here.
- There’s nothing to do.
Thomas Dwyer/Flickr Capital Park at Mad River Mountain is the Midwest’s #1 Terrain Park and The Avalanche Tubing Park features a 1,000-ft. tubing hill with 10 lanes. So what?
- You’re just going to be stuck inside all season.
Cleveland Metroparks/Facebook So you can plunge down a 700-ft. ice chute at speeds of up to 50 mph at The Chalet in Strongsville’s Mill Stream Run Reservation? Big deal.
- Our small towns don’t do anything.
City of Sculpture/Facebook Ice festivals, twinkling lights and scenic downtowns are overrated.
- Neither do our big cities.
Erik Drost/Flickr Who wants to go ice skating, anyway?
- Again, you’re likely going to be stuck inside all season.
Fountain Square/Facebook FYI: The ice rink and ice bumper cars will be on Cincinnati’s Fountain Square from November 7 - February 15. (But again, who’s even interested in that kind of nonsense?)
- Don’t even get us started on the winter dining options.
Blue Heron Brewery/Facebook The Blue Heron in Medina features private igloos—complete with your very own fire pit—that you can reserve for an unforgettable meal. But’s that’s really not very unique, right?
- Don’t expect our local businesses to get creative this time of year.
Fifty West Brewing Company/Facebook This winter, Fifty West Brewery in Cincinnati is adding a little magic to its beer garden with open fire pits and an ice skating rink—but that’s pretty standard, right?
- There just aren’t very many ways you can embrace the season and actually enjoy winter here in Ohio.
Steven Miller/Flickr A cabin getaway in a snowy forest is hardly idyllic.
