If you have either just moved to South Dakota or are planning on visiting anytime soon, I would like to be one of the first to welcome you to this beautiful state! If you have never been here before, there are a few things that may come as a surprise and maybe a little more challenging to adapt to, including:
- Yes, Mount Rushmore is here… however, there is a lot more to see and do, too!
Flickr/South Dakota If you have never visited, we HIGHLY recommend you do visit Mount Rushmore; however, we also recommend checking out our friendly small towns, ample shopping, state parks, and other various landmarks and attractions.
- Our food choices may be a bit unconventional, but trust us: They are delicious.
Flickr/CreeHawk What? You serve your tacos on generic store-bought shells and don’t smother your sandwiches in brown gravy? Boy, do we feel sorry for you!
- What is this income tax you speak of?
Flickr/401(K) 2012 That’s right: Not only is the cost of living in SoDak significantly lower than other states, but we do not have to pay state income taxes either. Jealous?
- We have no professional sports teams of our own.
Flickr/Jimmy Emerson, DVM Is it strange that we actually like it that way? Go Coyotes!
- “Midwest nice.”
Flickr/Vladimir Pustovit You have heard the term but may have thought that “Midwest nice” was just a saying. Not only is Midwest nice a thing, but we are pretty sure the term was coined after us South Dakotans!
- The weather.
Flickr/Charles (Chuck) Peterson While we here in South Dakota are fortunate in that we get to enjoy all four seasons, we are unfortunate in that we have to deal with the extreme version of each (especially come winter time with all the ice, snow, and consistently freezing temperatures).
- Casinos, casinos EVERYWHERE!
Flickr/rjacobsatcix If you thought you could only win big in Vegas, think again, as the Mount Rushmore State is packed full of exciting high-stakes casinos complete with all of your favorite games.
- Hunting and fishing are life.
Flickr/nicholasputz I mean, where did you think that grilled Walleye and buffalo burger came from?
- Bigger is better.
Flickr/Ellen Macdonald Whoever said, “Everything is bigger in Texas” has obviously never visited the world-famous, larger-than-life Wall Drug!
- The best things in life are free!
Flickr/Udo S As previously mentioned, South Dakota is one of the most affordable states to live in, but did you know that you can almost always find an exciting, FREE event happening around the state? From music festivals to art shows and markets, there is always something fun and free to do in SoDak.
- South Dakota and North Dakota are two completely different places…
Flickr/Jimmy Emerson, DVM …And you’d better not mix up the two!
Can you think of anything else that may be difficult for outsiders to adapt to? Let us know in the comments! For even more SoDak humor, check out Here Are 10 Jokes About People In South Dakota That Are Actually Funny.
